Feng Shui Q&A

by Aaron Lee Koch

LIVING WITHOUT DOCUMENTS

Dear Practitioner,

Like many other people, my family and I are in this country illegally, or “without documents” as they say. It is true that I broke laws by remaining here, but my intentions were pure. My only wish was to provide a better life for my family than we would have in our small town in Honduras. Now, after four years here, I can see a bright future. I have saved some money and we have the chance to move to a better location. But I fear that without legal status, we have no stability here and can lose everything at any time. Is there anything you can suggest to help stabilize and legalize our situation, so that we can truly feel at home in this country?

Grateful for Help

Brooklyn, NY

Dear Grateful,

Your situation is in no way unique. You and your family are caught up in a human conundrum that is affecting this entire country. Hopefully, this situation will be resolved soon, and in a humane, sensitive and caring way.

There are several symbols that can help you. Place a “tribute horse” statue near the entry to your home, positioned as if it just walked in. A “tribute horse” is a regal, dressed up horse. He will help bring a successful resolution to your dilemma.

Place a small pair of fu dogs (protective lions) in your entry area, facing the main door. These will help your household to be secure and protected.

Near the center of your home, display a statue of Kuan Yin, the Buddhist goddess of compassion and harmony. Alternatively, a statue of the Virgin Mary can be used here. This will fill your home with love and harmony.

Do some “inner Feng Shui” work! Use positive affirmations! Fill your mind with positive affirmative thoughts about deserving good things in life. A few examples:

“I am a wonderful person who deserves security and prosperity.”

“Good luck and happiness follow me everywhere.”

“I belong in my chosen country and I am safe here.”

Repeat the affirmations frequently! Say them silently, say them out loud, write them down, or all of the above! If the positive thoughts feel odd or unnatural, that just means that they are working on your subconscious – keep the positivity going and before long your consciousness will change. This will in turn lead to a change in your circumstances!

PROBLEMATIC RECEPTION AREA

Dear Practitioner,

I am a receptionist in a Garment District showroom. I have been at my job for 2 months and I am happy with the company, the work, and the interesting people I meet. I have been told that the last three receptionists each stayed for less than six months and in one case became seriously ill. My desk directly faces the main office entrance which is a pair of double glass doors. Beyond the doors is a long hallway. This cannot be a good setup yet I can’t move the desk or change the doors. Is there any way to improve on this?

Cindy

Lyndhurst, NJ

Dear Cindy,

The long hallway and the doors directly in front of you will generate harsh oncoming energy. This configuration of the reception area in which you work can be detrimental to you and may shorten the length of time that you will stay with the company. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to improve on this layout.

Place bushy plants, or vases of cut flowers, on both ends of your desk. These will protect you somewhat. If possible, mirror the front of the desk, or at least place a small mirror there. This will reflect back some of the harsh energy that is aimed at you.

ROOFTOP SWIMMING POOL

Dear Practitioner,

I live in a highrise with a rooftop swimming pool. I have read that this is bad luck and can cause loss of money. This is a nice building in a good neighbourhood, convenient to my work. My investments have not been doing well since living here, but neither were they doing well while in my last residence. It would be hard to find an apartment that is as well-situated at the price I am paying here. Is moving the best option in this situation?

Marilyn W.

Toronto, ON

Dear Marilyn,

Water on the roof, whether real or symbolic, is considered a negative feature. It is believed to cause possible loss of money or general bad luck. The ancient Chinese were so concerned about water on the roof that they considered blue ribbons in the hair to be unlucky. I do not agree with this last point.

In the case of real water such as a swimming pool, the best cure, short of leaving the pool empty, is to surround it with plants and wood furniture. These wood element features will symbolically absorb the water, thereby reducing its negative impact. However, since you may have little say in the building’s rooftop décor, I would recommend that you optimize the Feng Shui of your own apartment. This will minimize the impact of the water that is beyond your control. To further protect yourself, consider painting your ceilings a very light shade of green. Green represents the wood element and will symbolically absorb the water above you.

In the case of symbolic water, such as a roof with blue shingles, one solution is to construct a thin wood trim around the entire roof.

When selecting roofing for a new or existing house, of course, blue shingles should be avoided.
