A Prayer For Mindful Eating

by Sue Ustas

In the struggle to eat what’s best for us, too often a hectic schedule or strict budget make that even more of a challenge. Regardless of what your diet constraints are, we can all be more mindful of the energy of the food we ingest.

Have you ever had a meal prepared by a loved one where you could taste the LOVE in the food? Well, the cook may not have been consciously aware of what they were doing, but knowing they were preparing a meal just for you, they put their love and intentions into it. Years ago, I began experimenting with adding intentions to the food that I prepared. I would use a mantra, like "love", saying it repeatedly as I chopped vegetables. I also tried telling it that I loved it, that it was beautiful, and how grateful I was for the nourishment it would provide during the meal. I noticed I definitely felt better after eating food that I had added intentions to. This raised the question of eating out - how could I modify my food when I was not part of the cooking process? What if the cook was having a bad day, or my waiter had an argument just before his shift? I began to think about all the different opportunities my meal would have to be affected negatively before it was placed before me, and how I could offset that and replace it with positive, healing energy before I ingested it!

Later I read The Healing Power of Water by Masaru Emoto and was excited to see pictures and proof of what I had been experimenting with myself! I was fascinated at being able to SEE just how much our water and food is affected by our surroundings and intentions. This gave me the confidence to believe I truly was making a vibrational difference in the food placed in front of me, regardless of how it was prepared, so I began writing a prayer for all my meals. Over the years, I have shared this prayer (which I have affectionally labeled the "light prayer" since it’s intention is to fill your food with healing light energy to raise its vibration), with friends and strangers whenever I share a meal. I share it with you now, in the hopes that it enables you take a more active role in your own mindful eating.

First, I rub my palms together to open my hand chakras, then I hold my hands above my food and say aloud: "Infinite Spirit, I ask that you remove any pain or negativity from this food, the preparation and serving thereof; I ask that you instead replace it with light, love and healing energy, and that only that which is for my highest and best good is absorbed by my body, everything else be easily and gently disposed of. I offer up my heartfelt gratitude for this meal and this day which you have provided. Amen."
