Remembering to Dream: Focusing on the Positive Throughout Life's Challenges

by Cassendre Xavier

Recently I was reading a wonderful book by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer called You'll See It When You Believe It: The Way to Your Personal Transformation In it, he teaches how we can create positive change in our lives by being conscious of our thoughts and allowing the universe to flow with our positive intentions.

In one chapter, he discusses abundance mentality and scarcity mentality.

The book helped me see that for the last several years I had been living several areas of my life with an outlook and expectation of scarcity. I was surprised!
 How could this be?

I am such a postive-thinker, so focused on having high thoughts and finding the blessing in even the seemingly worst of circumstances. I am the queen of making not only lemonade out of lemons, but heck, champagne out of tap water! How could this have happened!

Now, don't get me wrong - I was tha-RILLED to learn this about myself... Because now... Now, I could make a change!

I would like to share what occurred to me, and see if any of it resonates with you:

Are there areas in your life that are very easy for you to manifest and do well in? Areas that are easy, breezy, and in which you expect things to go smoothly?

For me, two areas are pretty smooth sailing: Finding computer equipment, and finding sweethearts! I have, as my Law of Attraction associate Lorna Sophia Levy teaches, "little resistance" in those areas.

I also always feel that no matter what, something will always come through and help me in emergencies, so I will always have my basic life's needs covered, even if what I have doesn't appear to be satisfying to most people.

So, those are areas that I always have relaxed, and postive thoughts and expectations about. I have an abundance mentality and outlook around always having computer equipment, romantic companionship, and my very basic life need met.

Then, there are the areas in my life that I have the opposite outlook in... a scarcity mentality. Those are: Finding steady comfortable housing, finding steady gainful employment, and doing what I love for a living. (I can always do what I love, but starve in the process, apparently... Ha!)

So, in reading this chapter of Wayne Dyer's book, I saw quite clearly that I had been complaining about and feeling rather blocked in several areas of my life, from what serves as my office, to my inability to find steady housing, employment, and financially rewarding artistic and creative work.

Since that moment I have begun reframing all of these areas in my mind, and applying the same techniques and changes of thinking I do to other areas in my life.

Make a list of the areas in your life you have abundant thinking, and do well in.
Then, make a list of the areas in your life you have scarcity thinking, and do poorly in.

Then, coach yourself in the scarcity areas, and most important, be aware of your thoughts during the day, to be sure you aren't shooting yourself in the proverbial foot, attracting worse circumstances to reaffirm your beliefs in something being not possible for you.

Focus on what you have, what you can do, and always on what you love. Do not give any time to complaing or focusing on problems. Focus instead on solutions or options or best yet, simply moving towards what you do want.

When you do this, you will find changes come very very quickly, because the universe really wants to bring you want you want. It cannot bring you what you want when you complain, any more than a restaurant patron can order food with complaints... only requests.

Less than three days after I stopped complaining about the office I was  using, I decided I could easily find another place to be, and learned that a place I would love to work was hiring, and fast! (Unfortunately the job wasn't quite a fit for me, but it was pretty darned close and huge progress considering I had been unhappy in the current office space for years and had no concept that I could have anything better given my finances.)

We don't have to have everything change for the best overnight... but you can expect positive changes very quickly. Progress, not perfection, as the 12 Steppers say!

Another example of how my life has been turning around very quickly in practicing abundance mentality in all areas of my life, is that I did receive a solution to a problem practically overnight, just because I had a strong desire and followed it up with a belief that I could have it:

I wanted very much to share what I had been learning about staying positive during life's hard times, in a workshop, and I wanted to find a venue that would be a good fit for me and easy to use, and within my budget. I decided I was even willing to do this workshop for free!  (Wayne also shared in this book that he began giving away his books to friends, just from abundance, instead of always feeling he had to sell them... And lo and behold, giving them away got those folks to buy more books... for their friends and acquaintances!) So I knew that if what I really wanted was to share what I was learning, God and the universe and the angels... Everything holy, would support my dream.

Less than twenty-four hours later I was at a reception for other recipients of a grant I had recently received, and learned that that meeting space is available to us to present workshops free of charge to the community! So, guess who inquired that evening and since then has been in dialogue with booking that? You got it, it's me!

So, in closing, please remember that staying positive is easy when things are good, but it's easy to slip into the negative when times are hard.

Allow your feelings, but then remember to refocus your power and intention on the abundance of the universe, because what we focus on grows, what we expect, expands... And we always have a choice in what we focus on.

Be on the look out for my workshop of the same name, in the Greater Philadelphia area, and if you're in the neighborhood, hope you can join us...

In the meantime, I wish for you positive thinking and awareness of your power of co-creation!
