Krishna Das and Deva Premal & Miten - Phila., April 9th

by Staff

Krishna Das has been called the "Chant Master of American Yoga" by the New York Times. Deva Premal & Miten have been dubbed "The Johnny and June Carter Cash of chant" by Yoga Journal. Together they will be putting on an extraordinary concert at one of Philadelphia’s most popular venues, the Keswick Theatre, Friday, April 9 at 8pm. Highlighting the new found popularity of kirtan and mantra chanting, these musicians are each celebrating the release of new albums with their first co-headlined tour.

Krishna Das is one of the best-selling chant artists of all time, with over 300,000 records sold. Notable for making yoga and chant music more accessible to Western listeners, his music layers traditional kirtan – chanting the divine names – over popular arrangements and songs. Krishna Das has toured extensively through North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and South America, and counts Madonna and Mike D of the Beastie Boys amongst his fans.

Deva Premal & Miten are living proof that mantras are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. This couple, in both life and music, tour regularly across North America, Asia, Europe and Australia and have sold an incredible 900,000 albums worldwide. They have received accolades from The Dalai Lama and Eckhart Tolle.

Krishna Das will release Heart As Wide As The World, his first studio album in ten years, in 2010. The album is a collaboration with David Nichtern ("Midnight at the Oasis") and features musicians like Jerry Marotta (Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel) on drums, and world musicians Steve Gorn on bansuri flute and Benjy Wertheimer on esraj, amongst an array of other instruments.

Deva Premal & Miten are releasing their new CD/DVD Live In Concert which features the duo in concert accompanied by Nepalese bansuri maestro, Manose.

Other upcoming Keswick events include The Wailers on April 8, Bill Cosby on May 1, Railroad Earth & Donna the Buffalo on May 20, Bela Fleck with Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer on May 27 & B.B. King on July 7. For more information & tickets to upcoming Keswick events including Krishna Das on April 9, visit www.keswicktheatre.com  or call 215-572-7650. The Keswick Theatre is located in Glenside, PA (2 miles outside the Philadelphia city limits). This event is sponsored by the Khalsa Center.
