Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
I am currently fostering a mixed-breed dog named Missy. Missy is a Hurricane Katrina survivor, and was also chained outside for long periods. She cries loudly for hours at a time. Missy does have some arthritis; is her crying due to physical pain or something else?

Dear Jeff,
Missy is crying because she’s in deep emotional pain and wants you to know about it and understand. She said that she had "babies" that were taken away from her. I’m not sure if they were taken away in the sense that they were given away or if they died, because she would like you to light a candle for them with her. Missy also said that after the puppies she developed a breast problem and it became painful and sore.
Missy said that her heart hurts, and she feels like she’s alone and will always be alone. She feels that she has lost so much and it isn’t fair. Missy said that being alone made her a little crazy and she still can’t accept that things have changed. She knows that physically she’s with you, but she still feels alone. I told her that you’re there for her and that she can trust you. I explained that I would tell you what she said to me, and that did seem to make her feel better. I think that it will be very helpful if you sit down with her and tell her that you understand about the things that happened to her and that she’s going to be ok now.
Missy knows that her home with you is temporary and she actually doesn’t want to stay with you permanently. However, she feels she has some more healing to do with you before she goes to her forever home. Missy said she’d like to go to a home with older kids that will pay a lot of attention to her but not tease her. She also said she likes it when you talk to her in an affectionate voice. Missy feels that she needs to learn how to be joyful and silly, because now she always feels the weight of sadness upon her.
Missy spoke a little about when she was tied outside, saying that she always liked it when it rained, because even though she was wet it was the only time she was less hot and uncomfortable. She hated the sun shining directly on her. She said she still finds the sound of rain soothing, unless it’s a bad storm.
Missy is in some physical pain, and said she prefers not to walk on hard surfaces. But, she said the crying is from emotional pain, not physical.
On a lighter note, Missy said that she loves butter and also likes cake. She would like more cake, please!
I sincerely hope this information is helpful. Missy is a sweet dog who has suffered terribly and deserves a happy life.
Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
