Ask Your Pet

Dear Jennifer,
Frances Bean (Franny) is a 10 year old shitzu. She lives with my parents but spends a lot of time with me. She has recurring skin, ear and eye problems. My mom spends a lot of money on her (vet bills, grooming, etc.) and that’s the reason I can’t keep her with me. My mom also practices Reiki and is frustrated that it hasn’t worked on Franny. I love this dog to pieces and just want to know that she’s happy and pain free or if there’s anything that she needs or anything I can do for her that would cure some of her ailments. I would also like to know if she minds being swapped between two homes. Any insight you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

Dear Tanya,
Franny has quite an interesting personality! When I first connected with her she seemed very friendly, but then she gave me a little warning growl. When I asked her to explain this, Franny told me that if she loves someone she REALLY loves them, but she can be cautious around strangers and protective of her family.
Franny said that she loves you and enjoys her time with you, but that sometimes you walk her around too many people. She said that she worries about your mom when she’s away from her, so she’d prefer it if you’d visit your parents more and take her home with you less. Franny and your mom seem to have a mutual-worrying society, and have a constant need to know that the other is okay. Franny said that she is fulfilling your mom’s need to remain a mother, and that’s why she’s with her. However, while your mom thinks she’s the one taking care of Franny, the big secret is that Franny is really taking care of her! Franny also mentioned your mom having had a big health scare.
Franny wants your mom to know that the Reiki is indeed helping her. It makes her feel more grounded and relaxed, and also eases the joint discomfort she sometimes experiences. Reiki always "works", but since it goes to the area of greatest need and serves the recipient’s highest good, it doesn’t always work in the ways we expect.
Franny feels that her skin, ear, and eye problems are due to environmental allergies. Her veterinarian could do allergy testing on a blood sample and then recommend allopathic or holistic treatment, such as an antihistamine, homeopathic remedy, or flower essences. It would also be helpful if when Franny is indoors the windows are shut and there is a HEPA filter running.
The only pain that Franny mentioned was some mild joint discomfort. In addition to continuing the Reiki, I’d ask her veterinarian about starting her on a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. Despite her physical difficulties, Franny is a happy dog. She adores her people, knows that she is loved, and feels very important because of her role in your mother’s life.
