Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
My cat Quincey was 14 years old when he passed away in his sleep last Tuesday. I am happy he didn’t suffer but I miss him so much. He never left my presence. He was like a light and now it’s as if someone turned off the light switch. My question is: my other cat, Zen, is very depressed. How long will he be this way and what can I do to help him? He was also very close with Quincey. I am totally devastated that Quincey is not here with me now. I would love any advice.
Thank You,
Bettiann B.
Dear Bettiann,
I’m very sorry for your loss, and hope that your grief will lessen with time. In order to fully address your concerns, I chose to communicate with both Quincey and Zen.
When I connected with Quincey, I immediately felt deep peace and love radiating from him. He said that he loves you and is sorry he had to leave. He misses you, but is glad to be out of his body. He wanted to know why you are concerned about him when you know he is in a "wonderful place of joy and peace". Quincey would like you to stop worrying about him and reach out more to friends. He said you are isolating yourself too much and it’s not healthy. As for Zen, Quincey said that he’s just adjusting to the loss and will be fine. He suggested that you get another cat when Zen is ready.
I then spoke to Zen, who conveyed that he misses Quincey but is slowly adapting to his absence. He said you are already doing the right thing by giving him lots of extra affection and attention. Zen is a very friendly and loving cat, and he agreed with Quincey that he will be happier with a new feline friend once he has had adequate time to grieve. It’s my sense that Zen’s emergence from his depression will be gradual, and will occur over the next few months.
To further assist Zen, you might want to consider a veterinary flower essence formula. You can try Bach’s Rescue Remedy, or do a web search for a formula designed to specifically address grief.
Thank you for sharing your story with my readers. Zen’s marked depression over the loss of his buddy Quincey serves as a potent reminder to us all that animals are thinking beings with rich emotional lives. Their feelings and concerns should always be respected and honored by their human companions.
Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
