Spirit Guides: Aspects of Self
by Katherine Illescas
Recently, a friend asked me where I got my information when giving a reading: whether from the client’s Spirit Guides or my own? I hadn’t really thought about it because my main concern is that the information be healing and practical. My response was: “I get it from Universal Consciousness.”
I first encountered the Spirit Guide concept a few years ago in mediumship courses. It is widespread in the lightworker and seeker circle. The simple definition is that they are entities that accompany us who can help us along our path. I myself met different personas and heard different voices, and though I wasn’t quite as attached to their individual personalities as others, I entertained and sometimes acted on the advice. Guides could also be entertaining since they can have full personalities, ethnicities and more.
It was in trance circle where the concept started bothering me. Each person would channel their respective guide and there was a discussion among Spirit Guides and we were witnesses, since you have to put yourself aside to channel. After circle, everyone walked out satisfied, except me. I didn’t find it as healing or helpful as message mediumship. I went deeper in thought wondering how was the discussion different than my own philosophical thoughts? I wondered why are we here then? If they have more wisdom and information, etc. I believe the Spirit world is just another side of a coin, not higher but equal to our side. It seemed we were disregarding our experience.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was a friend going on and on about a Spirit Guide that was really crass and was making her more assertive. It bothered me that she associated the assertiveness, bravado almost, just from him as if she was helpless but was excited and grateful to get his input. This saddened me because she is strong and powerful and why would this invisible persona have more power? Why would we not accept responsibility and/or power for some very human aspects?
We could be flexible enough to entertain the thought that these guides are part of our individual consciousness combined with the collective consciousness. Archetypes, as Jung called them. They are aspects within us but acquire personality traits and wisdom that we would otherwise not acknowledge as our own. Once we own said aspects, these guides become quieter and their voices/messages don't sound like other voices but they are our own voice.
Our brain communicates this concept very creatively. People say things like “this Guide made me be more playful,” “I would’ve never said or done that”, “I would’ve never come up with that on my own”. The issue only arises when we do not own these aspects of our personality. Such aspects as: assertiveness, responsibility, lightheartedness, wisdom, intuition, etc. It may be our fear that if it comes from us, it could be rejected, chastised, and ridiculed by others, or worse, by ourselves. This relates to feelings of inferiority or from a time in our lives when these aspects presented themselves and did not have an opportunity to be expressed or were negatively received.
It is like the security blanket removed from the child so he instills security in himself. As adults, we know the blanket does not make the child safe. It only makes him feel safe. It is only when he outgrows it and really feels safe that he is solvent in the world and relates better to others, without a wall between them. What would a child be like if he still carried lucky socks around and didn’t know he had talent? Similarly with the Spirit Guide concept, what if an adult thinks his strength, wisdom or foresight comes from an outer source and never knows it comes from within? Why are we robbing ourselves of this power that is our gift and our right?
Another example is female mediums years ago. They usually channeled men and though that may have been the case, at a time when women weren’t heard, this was also a way to voice their opinions. Is this what we’re still doing to ourselves today? Giving outside forces our internal power? Why? When we can now speak and be freer and we can acknowledge our connection to Universal Consciousness.
Is it the fear of what if we're all alone? We are not alone though, we're more united than we think, without so many outer voices and with strength to finally recognize we're One. We have an indestructible magical energetic connection. We can tap into the immense source of Wisdom and Love because we are part of it.
This is another instance where it is crucial to remember Marianne Williamson’s words: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
So when considering information from a guide, let’s ask ourselves what does this guide provide or do for us that we feel we cannot do or be on our own, or are not receiving from others?
Once Spirit Guide aspects are incorporated we become fuller human beings experiencing all our Self within this incarnation. This puts the power of limitless loving wisdom back where it belongs, within each of us.
