So I’m sitting in my favorite chair in my favorite corner of my house last Sunday reading my new favorite book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, by Robin Sharma (which I would highly recommend). I had asked my 11 and 13 year old boys to take an old broken patio table and chair set out to the curb. While I was reading the book, I thought "I hope the boys put the table and chair set right at the curb and don’t go into the street." At that very moment I heard someone yelling, "Oh my God!!!!!!!"
Somehow I knew innately that my boys were safe, but nevertheless I ran out the front door to see what happened. We live on a back country road that over the years, as happens, there’s been more traffic and what’s worse travelling at higher speeds (particularly in front of our house as we live on the only part of the road that curves). So the "Oh my God" came from a bicyclist that was out for his 40 mile Sunday bike ride who was nearly run off the road from a motorcyclist that had hit the curve too fast and lost control of his motorcycle narrowly avoiding the biker.
Lucky no one was hurt (the motorcycle didn’t fair so well but was still ride-able). I went to stand next to the bicyclist because he was very distraught on the verge of tears, and he quietly and simply said, "I just saw my life flash before my very eyes." I checked that he wasn’t physically hurt, and proceeding back into my house at which point (I don’t know why), I yelled, "Remember everything happens for a reason."
The very next day I was out shopping for a few more school supplies for my boys and the accident was on my mind. As I was leaving the store, as if to put an exclamation point on the previous day, a woman at the checkout counter started laughing very loud with someone on her cell phone and said, "….I can’t believe it, but we know everything happens for a reason."
This is a life principle that I believe in so strongly. I don’t believe in blind luck or things that are completely out of my control. I believe there’s a master plan to things that happen in my life. And the reason we don’t all think like that is because when bad things happen (as it did with the accident in front of my house), no one likes to think that somehow, someway that had a purpose.
To just share a few examples in my own life… I went to Rutgers Engineering School. I hated it. Graduated with honors, but knew I chose the wrong profession, one I couldn’t be passionate about BUT I met my wonderful husband, Steve, whom is my best friend and whom I have been married to for 17 ½ terrific years. EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. When my twin brother and I were young and our parents were going thru a bad divorce, we were separated for about 6 months, and once we lived back together again, we had some pretty rough times living with the circumstances of divorce (as many children do). But this separation and rough times has brought us closer than most siblings, I dare say (and we are that way with our older brother, too). EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON. When three years ago we launched "8 Weeks to Wellness" as a business model to other chiropractors, we failed. But it was thru that process that we met Dr. Agasar, my new business partner, and together created one of the most beautiful wellness centers in the country, where I get to go to a workplace that I absolutely love and get to serve patients. And why after 2 more years of trying, we had eleven chiropractic offices from around the country come this past Friday and Saturday to evaluate our 8 Weeks to Wellness business model for their office (with great success). EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON.
So I would challenge you to examine life events that have occurred, both good and bad. What good came out of these circumstances? How has your life been directed by some power greater than yourself? And as I read recently, perhaps you’ll realize that, yes, life isn’t always fair, but it is always good.
