Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
My cat Boojie is 20 and is very sick. His front paws have been bent under since right after he saw a new veterinarian. A different vet diagnosed it as bow tendons, but doesn’t know the cause. Also, Boojie is lethargic and has some blood in his stools. His kidney function numbers are very bad. Please ask Boojie what caused the bow tendons and what is causing his other symptoms. Did something happen with the new vet when I wasn’t in the room? Am I taking good enough care of him? - Sherry N.
Dear Sherry,
I’m so sorry that Boojie is unwell. While I’m not a veterinarian and none of this should be taken as a medical diagnosis or medical advice, I was able to get Boojie’s perspective on his situation. First, he conveyed a feeling of utter exhaustion to me, and said that his kidneys are failing and making his body toxic. He asked that you not blame yourself or anyone else for what is happening to him. Boojie feels that the blood in his stool is being caused by inflammation in his digestive tract. He said that the bow tendons were not caused by any one thing, but are part of what’s happening to him as a whole. He described his body as being "overloaded".
Boojie said that you are taking good care of him, and would like you to please stop worrying about it. However, he wants you to accept the fact that his time is coming very soon. Boojie doesn’t want you to drive yourself crazy looking for answers to his medical situation and trying different treatments. Rather, he would like you to focus on making him comfortable and happy, and then helping him to cross over when he is no longer having adequate quality of life.
It’s a good idea to talk to a veterinarian now about the possible signs that it’s time to help Boojie cross over. Decide in advance what the cues are going to be, rather then waiting until you’re too emotional to have clarity. Please keep in mind that animals do not share our fear of death. When I speak to animals in transition, their concerns are normally for their human families. Aside from that, they usually express relief that they will be leaving their sick bodies and returning to the world of Spirit. Many of them already look forward to returning to their families in new, healthy bodies when the time is right.
For now, I encourage you to spend as much time as you can with Boojie. Sit with him and send him feelings of love and peace. Tell him how special he is to you and how he has enriched your life. Relive happy memories with him. When the time comes, let him know that you’ll be okay if he’s ready to cross over, and honor all he means to you by helping him to do so with dignity, compassion, and love.
Many Blessings, - Jennifer Dickman
