Vigorous exercise has been shown to be one of the most potent anti depressants, equivalent to most pharmaceuticals. It is also one of the many things that can help us handle our stress better. Since we store a lot of our stress reactions in our bodies, doing things to de-stress the body, (in addition to exercise) like acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, etc., can help negate the impact stress has on us. Of course, we also want to address the psychological aspects and work toward reducing the source of our stressors.
Winter is the hardest time of year for most people to exercise. So, what do you do? Do what you should do the rest of the year: stretching, strengthening and movement exercises. The trick is to actually do it!
The advantages of physical exercise could fill a whole book. It is not only a very powerful anti-depressant, it also helps stimulate our immune system and helps protect our cardiovascular system from heart disease. And, best of all, most exercises can be done at home for free or running outside for the cost of sneakers. However, we have found that most people need some structured supervision, especially in the beginning, to help them keep motivated, keep on track, and learn to exercise properly. In our practice, we motivate people to do strength training twice a week, which only needs to take 45 minutes when done focused and properly. And 3 times a week we suggest people do interval sprint training for 20 minutes, where the heart rate is raised 4 times in that 20-minute period.
This is why we offer a program called 8-Weeks to Wellness that helps people reach their health and fitness goals by incorporating chiropractic care, personal training, nutritional counseling, massage therapy and stress reduction into one personalized plan.
