Divine Wisdom From Michele Livingston
by Michele Livingston
I am a college student in Taiwan. I was visiting a friend in the eastern USA and saw your column in Wisdom. It seems you give guidance on many subjects and help many people. I have a question that has bothered me since childhood. I am a homosexual. I love boys more than girls. The number of homosexuals is becoming larger in the USA as it is here in Taiwan. I am comfortable with myself, but what bothers me is why I am a gay. Did I choose to be homosexual before I was born? I am concerned if this would cause some violations to my Buddhist principles of life. Would you please give me some suggestions or opinions on my current situation? Thank you so much. Sincerely, Thomas
Dear Thomas, thanks for writing about your personal situation. I receive a myriad of questions on many different subjects. There are many opinions about homosexuality from religious doctrines to medical or psychological theories. But this concept also has a "spiritual" perspective that is sometimes overlooked. Therefore I contacted my angels and guides for an answer. Please realize that the information I receive is not "etched in stone," so to speak, but is a spiritual opinion on a particular subject.
First, we are all co-creators with God and because of free choice and free will, we are capable of choosing our own sex each lifetime. We can choose to be a boy or a girl before conception takes place or when our infant body is developing in the womb. The sex organs do not develop immediately, so there is time to change our minds and change our sex. We decide, along with help from our spirit guides, if it would be more advantageous to learn our soul lessons as a male or female. The course or destiny of a human life can change drastically, when it is viewed from either a male or female perspective. The sex we choose also affects how we are treated in life. A female body gives one the ability to have children, and softer personality traits. A male body gives physical strength and prowess and sometimes even the potential for higher paying jobs! The dynamics in a family unit can drastically change and be affected by either sons or daughters. The soul then must be objective in deciding if it wants to carry out its mission as a man or a woman.
One can decide on a certain sex, and at any point in the baby body’s development, the soul can change its mind. Hopefully this decision happens before the sex organs are developed, but it can occur afterwards. From a metaphysical viewpoint, this is when homosexuality occurs. Many homosexuals admit that they felt different from their own sex in early childhood. For example, a little girl may not want to wear dresses or bows in her hair. She may prefer playing with boys or engaging in masculine pursuits. This is how she feels deep inside and it is quite different than being a mere tomboy. A boy in the formative years (1 to 5) may secretly want to wear dresses like his sisters, or play with dolls instead of trucks. There are some individuals who claim they became homosexual from a molestation or sexual abuse, and this may be true. For the most part, however, homosexuality has nothing to do with hormones or abuses, but comes from the decision a soul made before birth — the choice to be a girl or boy.
Another issue that can overshadow this situation is past lives. For example, if a soul predominantly had past lives as a male and incarnates into a female body, there can be discomfort, and vice versa. A soul can literally feel misplaced or imprisoned in a body that doesn’t suit it. The decision to transgender (change sex) can be an option for those who find it intolerable to live life with the body that they now have. It is important though to balance both the "feminine and masculine" sides of one’s nature. To explain further, everyone in the world, whether they are male or female, has two sides to their nature. The "masculine side" is strong-willed, direct, assertive, intellectual, communicative, competitive, analytical and driven to succeed. On the other hand, the "feminine side" is passive, creative, intuitive, healing, nurturing, emotional and spiritual. It’s important each lifetime to try to balance both sides for soul growth.
Also remember that the human species in general is complex and since every human is an individual, it is difficult (and maybe unwise) to group people together. It’s like saying, "all the Lutherans stand on this side of the room and all the Catholics stand on that side." …or "all the Democrats go north and all the Republicans move south ...all males will be grouped together in this area and all females in another area."
We humans often tend to categorize sects or classes of people as well as various opinions on different subjects and issues. God does not look at whether you are Lutheran, Catholic, Republican, Democrat, male or female. God looks into each individual’s heart to see the true motives of each person. The greatest gift that one can learn during a lifetime is to look at another individual without judgment. Therefore, if one leans toward homosexuality and is a good person – is kind, compassionate, loving, caring – they must surely be in God’s grace! Each religion, for example, wants their particular belief system to flourish. Some believe by having many children the doctrines of that belief system are perpetuated. When one is of a homosexual orientation, no children are created through that union and therefore (in the eyes of some) it is a fruitless relationship. But what of love? Is the homosexual relationship caring and real?
In each culture and race there are also distinct differences in people and their personalities. In general, races may have similar religious belief systems such as Asians being Buddhist, Caucasians believing in Christianity or Judaism, Indians practicing Hinduism and so on. But each group is filled with individuals who perceive life differently and express unique thoughts, ideas and actions. Therefore, it is most important not to categorize or judge a sect of society, a religious group, a political group, a particular race or culture, or an individual’s sexual preference. Each human is on an individual journey experiencing and creating life as he or she needs to, or as he or she sees fit. Free choice and free will should not be limited. Let each man or woman choose the path they will travel. The only question asked by God in heaven (my guides tell me) is, "How have you loved?" In essence, "What have you done from your heart for your fellow man and the planet?"
So Thomas, I hope the information given gives you some clarity about your situation and I wish you all the best!
