"I'd Follow My Bliss... If Only I Could Find It!"
by Lynn A. Robinson
When you follow your bliss... doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else. — Joseph Campbell
Have you ever asked a teenager what they wanted to be when they grew up? You’ll usually get an answer ranging from not a clue, “I dunno” to a kid who is raring to go on their career of choice. Many teens, (as well as their parents) fall into the former category!
Let’s face it we’re not often trained to ask those self-reflective questions that offer insight into our likes and dislikes, strengths and weakness. You take the first job that comes down the pike and your life seems to form around that early choice. As a result you may have ended up feeling stuck in a job or a career that is a long way away from your true passion and interests. For example:
You took the first job offered to you rather than believing you could find your “dream job.”
Your folks insisted you go straight into college instead of taking a year off to travel and “find yourself.”
You went to law school because your father went to law school and his father went to law school.
You got married right out of high school and had kids and felt you needed to do anything you could to make ends meet.
It’s not that there’s anything fundamentally wrong with doing any of the above. It’s that when you make choices like these over and over again, you begin to get out of touch with your own dreams, passions and desires. You’re essentially giving your own spirit a message that says, “What you want doesn’t matter.” It doesn’t take long before that vessel of information about your life mission isn’t giving you intuitive messages any more. After decades of neglect, this channel of communication from your spirit is a little worn out.
Perhaps as you’ve gotten older you began to believe it’s not really possible to make a living doing what you love or you just have to make do with what life has given you so far. How do you begin to turn this around? How can you follow your bliss when you’ve never known what it was in the first place?
You begin by believing that you are here on this Earth for a reason and to commit today to understand and live that purpose.
Stop saying, “I don’t know what I want.” “It doesn’t matter.” “I’m not sure.” Those words block the flow of your intuition. It’s time to pay attention to the inklings of spirit. It’s called many things, hunch, gut feeling, inner voice, universal wisdom, intuition, instinct, hunches, six sense. You have it. It’s hard-wired into your very being.
Intuition communicates in many different ways, through dreams, feelings, physical sensations, words, images and a sense of knowing. There’s no one right way to receive its wisdom. Begin to listen to it. It is the compass of your soul showing you the direction to you your own unique path to happiness, peace and abundance.
