Stopping A Cycle of Calamity
by Madis Senner
They say when it rains it pours; meaning that when calamity and tragedy comes into our lives it can become a never ending cycle. Who amongst has not faced a series of calamities and setbacks that we thought was never going to end.
I had such series of setbacks in 1997 just before my spiritual transformation. In a period of few weeks I found my marriage of ten years coming to an end, loosing a job, having one of my dogs seriously injured among other things. It seemed everything was breaking or ending. I learned a very valuable lesson about turning back such tragedy that I would like to share with you. I found that by giving and giving and giving I was able to turn the cycle and eventually many good things came into my life.
Take an Inventory of your Life
When stopping a downpour of calamity you need to consider whether there are factors around you that might be bringing on your crisis. Here are a few to consider.
First, if you are negative, or feel defeated halting the cycle of calamity will be difficult. While hardships brings sorrow and grieving is often justified we have to be careful not to dwell in it. As the law of attraction says we attract what we put out. At a minimum you should try as best you can to look at things positively—this is a learning experience, it will come to an end.
Secondly, the company you keep profoundly influences your life. We have all heard about how associating with negative people will bring negativity into your life. But, I am talking about something much more subtle. As the sages say we are one, which means that we are linked to each other. This connection to others increases with those that you are close to.
With each group, association, circle of friends, fellow workers, teams that you belong to you create a linkage and a stronger bond to those that are part of that cohort. It does not have to be formalized group. The members of each these groups will have an impact upon you, how strong of one will depend upon your closeness, time spent together etc.
I mention this group phenomenon because what happens with others in your various groups can spread like the flu. In other words, your calamity may be generated by others—what is going on with them, whether positive or negative will have an influence upon you. This is not to say that you should become a loner, because the benefits of connecting with others far outweigh any bad that it may bring into your life. Just reassess and examine and see if changes might be made if only temporarily.
Third, the environment you live and work in will shape your health and well being. Dowsers have long found that there are cancer houses, or cancer clusters, where there are detrimental energies that can significantly affect your health. A bad location can affect every aspect of your life.
These are a few of the things that you should consider in taking an inventory of your life.
Give, and Give, and give….
Focus your life on giving and help others all that you can. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, or a hospital or a senior citizen’s home. Help your neighbor, do the chores for someone who is weak, old or infirmed. Volunteer for an organization that helps those in need; autistic children, mentally challenged, special needs. Become a prisoner’s advocate. In Syracuse we have a Jail Ministries group http://www.ccoc.us/jail-ministry.html that advocates for the imprisoned, particularly the indigent, by visiting them and helping with bail. We reap what we sow, so when we help others, others help us.
Remember the words of Jesus who tells us that we benefit from giving, because when we help others we are helping God:
“Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Mt.25.34-36)
We are truly one, when we help others we help ourselves.
Do a contemplative meditation on how you can give, this will not only provide you with ideas but it will better help make giving part of who you are.
Pray For Others
Praying for others can be a powerful tool to help heal us and spiritually grow. All of us pray for others in varying degrees. Take it a step further and begin to pray for strangers. When ever you see someone while walking or driving, instead looking at their appearance or judging them, send them a prayer; something as simple as, “Help them God” or “Bless you” or “May Good Things come to.”
When I was beginning my spiritual quest and still living in NYC I used to regularly pray for strangers. When I would get on a subway I would quickly peruse the subway car to see who appeared to be in need. That was the last time that I looked at them, then I would begin to pray and pray for them until it was time to get off for my stop.
Help others and help yourself
Giving and helping others is a powerful tool to employ to stop a cycle of calamity. It will take time before it begins to take effect, but when it does it can work wonders. It may not work for you, but it is definitely worth giving a try.
Even if you are not in a cycle of calamity the benefits of an aggressive campaign of giving can be spiritually transformative. It is a sharp contrast to the spiritual exercises advocated by most self help gurus who have us focus on how we can build the self. Instead your focus turns to the needs of others and helping them.
With the path of giving you give up control. You stop thinking about what you are going to do to develop yourself or what you are going to manifest and leave it up to the universe; and the universe will respond. Because when you help others, others will help you in ways that you cannot imagine. That is because the universe sees all of you and knows what you need or don’t, often better than you.
Give.
Thanks to my friend and teacher Bill Attride, an astrologer http://astrologerbillattride.typepad.com/astrologer-bill-attride/, for introducing me to the power of giving when I confronted a crisis of calamity when I left Wall Street and began my spiritual path.”
