Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
According to my cat Turtle’s vet, she has fluid in her lungs and may die or go into respiratory failure very soon. I’m confused about what to do. Would you please ask her how she’s feeling? Is she in pain? Is there anything else I can do for her? Does she want me to plan a euthanasia date or wait until she is in respiratory failure? Does she have anything to say to me? Any special requests?
Lisa
Dear Lisa,
I’m usually unable to respond to time-sensitive requests in this space, but your email happened to arrive just as I was searching for the right question for this issue’s column. (Note to readers: I of course emailed the results of my session with Turtle to Lisa immediately.)
I just finished talking with Turtle. She said she’s feeling very weak and tired. It’s an effort to move and she’s having some difficulty breathing. There is a constant feeling of pressure on her chest, like bricks on her, and it’s very uncomfortable and also scary. She is quite ready to get out of her body. She begs you to help her cross over as soon as possible.
I asked Turtle if there was anything you could do for her in the meantime, and she said to be as close to her as possible as much as possible. She also wants you to be with her when she crosses over, and is afraid that it might happen while you’re not home. That’s an additional reason she wants you to help her cross over soon.
Turtle is worried that her body might hold on a few more days, and she doesn’t want to wait that long. She doesn’t want the difficulty breathing to get any worse. She’s becoming increasingly frightened and doesn’t want her crossing to be a fear-filled, traumatic event for either of you.
I’ve never had an animal request this before, but she said she wants you to keep her ashes until you find a perfect spot to scatter them. She wants you to put them in a beautiful spot, close to your home, that makes you happy when you think of her.
Turtle also shared that the two of you are like girlfriends or sisters and are "strong women together". She’s sorry this is painful and difficult for you and wishes she could stay longer. She wants you to know that she had a wonderful life with you and loves you very much. You’ll always be sisters and friends. Turtle doesn’t think she’ll come back soon, but wants you to know that even if she doesn’t return to you in this life, you’ll eventually be together on the other side. Until then, she’ll be watching over you and visiting, especially in your cozy, quiet times. I’m sorry you and Turtle are going through such a painful time right now, and hope that this at least helps you find some comfort and clarity.
Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
