Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
I’m a volunteer at a cat shelter. We have a girl named Bianca who has been here for some time. She’s great with other cats, but skittish with people. She’ll come over to you, smell your hand, but shy away when you try to pet her. This is making it hard for her to find her forever home. Why is she like this and what can we do to help her? - Karen
Dear Karen,
The first thing Bianca told me is that she’s been in the rescue too long. It’s making her very stressed and harming her ability to socialize with people. She needs to find a permanent home or stable foster situation soon. Bianca appreciates being given her food, and likes people with calm, loving energy. She recognizes the people who really care about her and responds better to them. However, at this point Bianca has had so many negative experiences occur when people touch her that she is very hesitant to allow human contact. She said she doesn’t really know how to interact with people the way they want her to, and is more comfortable interacting with other cats.
Bianca really needs help learning to trust again. While she remains in the shelter, it would be very helpful if she has a consistent caregiver, or at least as few caregivers as possible. Ideally, she’d do best in a permanent home or foster situation with one or two other cats and a person who is very loving, gentle, and willing to patiently work with her. Until then, the people who care for her at the shelter should be as calm as possible and try to radiate very loving and reassuring energy to her. She is very, very sensitive. Noises, people in bad moods, loud voices, and changes in her surroundings are all upsetting to her.
Additionally, Bianca mentioned that she was separated from her feline mother too early. When this happens, animals often have issues with insecurity and distrust. This makes it even more important that Bianca be placed in a stable environment, where she knows for sure that she is safe and loved.
I think that flower essences would be quite useful for Bianca. There’s an individual essence called "miniature rose" that is very healing for animals that have been separated from their mothers prematurely. There are also flower essence combination formulas specifically made to assist animals in shelters and rescues. I think one of these, which you can find easily by searching the web, would be of great help to Bianca. Flower essences can simply be placed in the animal’s water dish, so they’re very easy to use.
Bianca is such a sweet girl, and in such need of finding a forever home, that I really wish I was in a position to adopt her myself. I’ll send her lots of healing Reiki energy, and pray that she finds her forever home soon. Thanks for all you do for the animals! Many Blessings, Jennifer Dickman
