Ask Your Pet

by Jennifer Dickman

Hi Jennifer,

My dog, Zeno, who is well fed, dug a turkey skeleton out of the garbage and is hiding it somewhere. I can’t find any trace of it in the yard, other than the paper it was wrapped in, can’t watch him every minute, yet he keeps coming inside with more and more turkey bones. I know he ate a lot of it since he threw some up the other day. Where is he hiding the turkey skeleton and is he okay from whatever bones he already ate?

Mary A.

Dear Mary,

It was a great pleasure speaking to Zeno; he is quite the character and very articulate! Zeno told me that he is "really a good fellow who tries to please," but that he sometimes gets himself into trouble. This is because he is very highly intelligent and acts out of boredom, rather than any intent to misbehave.

As for the turkey, Zeno says that it was a "terrible mistake that made him feel quite ill." He says that there is some very light scratching in his esophagus from a bone that he swallowed, but it just feels a little sore and is nothing to worry about. Zeno does not feel that he has completely digested and passed all of the bones that he ate, but doesn’t think that they will cause any problem for him. That being said, I do feel that you should consult a veterinarian just to be safe.

Zeno says that there is a small piece of the turkey in an area of underbrush by a low wall or border that looks to be either brick or stone. However, most of the turkey is gone at this point. A little of it was taken by squirrels and other animals, and the rest Zeno has eaten or brought to you.

As Zeno is very intelligent and eager to please, you might actually be able to get him to lead you to the remaining piece of turkey. Animals communicate telepathically, and often pick up on the images in our minds. Try going outside with him and asking him to lead you to the turkey, while picturing the turkey bones in your mind and visualizing Zeno leading you to them. Send him an image of yourself being very pleased with him and praising him for successfully taking you to the turkey. You might feel a little silly, but with practice this technique can be extremely effective.
