Eating For Life: Reversing Stage 2 Diabetes
by Veronica Williams
I knocked on the door of the doctor’s office with a feeling of dread and impending doom. What were the results of the test likely to reveal? A week earlier I had taken a repeat blood test for the high glucose which had previously been discovered. If the results were the same it would mean that I was a diabetic and there would have to be significant changes in my lifestyle. I sat opposite the doctor who looked very sombre and after the exchange of pleasantries waited for him to let me know the outcome of the tests. Unfortunately it was confirmed that I was a diabetic and it was recommended that I began medication. I am very reluctant to taking drugs which can be highly addictive and also contain chemicals and toxins which may play havoc with my overall general health. After negotiation with the doctor he said that as an interim measure I could for three months try alternative strategies to see if this would help with my stage 2 diabetes. He recommended that I continued to exercise and that I paid close attention to my diet.
I recognised the seriousness of the situation and began to research alternative remedies to treat diabetes. I came across a book entitled 1 The Miracle Diabetes Reversal Cure – Discover How to Naturally Reverse and Cure Diabetes written by Germaine Hudson. This book has proved to be very helpful in understanding my own body and giving hope in terms of reversing the condition. While the book claims that “the American Diabetes Association believes that diabetes is a chronic disease which is incurable’, they on the other hand have a different view and argue that diabetes is a condition which can be cured.
I had nothing to lose in following the recommendations made in the book not least of which was to confirm what my doctor had already suggested, which was to totally change my diet and to exercise at least four times a week. I have not eaten meat for some years, preferring to eat fish and chicken. However even the taste of chicken was starting to taste unpleasant, so I had reverted to only fish and eggs. It was now time to change the remainder of my diet and cut out sugary and starchy foods and to begin to eat sensibly. I did not so much become a vegetarian as a ‘plantarian’ as I started to eat lots of fresh green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, cucumber, broccoli and other green vegetables. I also began to drink green juices to try and balance the ph level of my body. The result of these changes has been startling and in three months I have reduced weight by at least 20lbs.
My weight loss which was not achieved through diet alone also took into account exercising at the gym four times a week. The exercises in which I am engaged have encouraged me to regain muscle mass, strengthen my whole body and also through cardiovascular exercises to promote a healthy heart. I really feel the benefits of these changes in my lifestyle; which includes re-hydrating the body by drinking 6- 8 glasses of water daily. In terms of the benefits from my lifestyle change I feel so much fitter and almost re-vitalised. At 57 years of age I am able to run, jump and skip like I did when I was 35 years of age.
Just one more thing diabetes or stage 2 diabetes usually means the body is not producing sufficient insulin to the body or that the cells are ignoring the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. I genuinely believe that the changes in my lifestyle have energised and increased my fitness level so that the stage 2 diabetes is now a thing of the past. This has recently been confirmed by my doctor – I no longer have stage 2 diabetes, which means that I need to adhere to the lifestyle changes already made and have six monthly checks to ensure there is not a recurrence of this disease.
