Remaining Centered in Changing Times

by Sue Ustas

Often times when we experience changes, we lose our center and fear causes us to reach back to a time when we felt more secure. Whether revisiting an old career, moving back to our home town, or contacting an EX, we look for emotional touchstones to validate our worth, strength or abilities. I find that when experiencing spiritual changes, it can be a lot trickier to find that same validation. A spiritual path is not a visible or tangible thing, it is more a tug that pulls us from our intuition, leading us further down the road, sometimes in delightful synchronicities and other times every which way, leaving us with little sense of time or direction.

Going through spiritual evolution can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. While we are all experiencing unprecedented earth changes, we are also experiencing individual ups and downs as well. These experiences have the ability to pull us out of center and confuse us. How do we get back to our core? The other day I had an experience with this - I had agreed to meet a visiting customer at the shop very early on my day off. Before I owned ZuZu’s, I worked in an office in Cambridge. Although I work many more hours now, my Ego sometimes pokes at me for opening the store later in the day. That morning I woke up very early, so I decided to get up. I had breakfast, ran an errand, then headed to the shop to meet my customer. After they had departed, I thought how easily I had returned to my desk-job routine of being an early riser, how I could still easily do that if I wanted to. After using the rest room, I discovered I had put my underwear on inside-out in my "sharp" early-morning routine. Instead of allowing my Ego to chime in, I laughed out loud at myself, fully amused.

In being able to laugh at myself, I was able to shatter that Ego voice that tries to lure me from my core. Your Ego loves when you doubt - doubt are seeds of fear, which distracts us with an endless number of questions to pull us away from our path and out of our core. It’s important to find your own way to dissipate doubt and fear - whether it’s laughter, meditation, journaling, yoga, whatever works, use it!

Remember that we are here for all kinds of evolution, to make progress. Change is necessary, and while it can be challenging or uncomfortable, it doesn’t always have to be. We come into this world fearless with voracious appetites for knowledge; and in our elder years, resign ourselves to not caring what other people think. Somewhere in-between, we allow peer pressure, society or our families to dictate how we live our lives. It’s ultimately your journey, and not just your responsibility but also completely within your abilities to navigate your path and move through these changes purposefully.
