Add-Ons
An issue that you will eventually have to deal with, if you have not dealt with it before, is called an add-on. Add-ons are the umbrella title for anything that a person includes in their Reiki session that was not taught by either Dr. Usui or Mrs. Takata. I mention them so you can put them into your basket of knowledge to see what if anything resonates within you, would empower you and help complete your foundation so you can fully claim Reiki as your own. For me, it is the add-ons that fully empowered me.
By now, the Reiki you know could be anywhere from the same as before you started reading to something vastly different, something much more personal. Or it could lie anywhere along a continuum with each possibility above on either end.
Just as I found some of the aspects of Reiki not in complete harmony with myself, others, who have come before me, have also found the same and have widened the scope of a Reiki session to include procedures that are not from Dr. Usui’s Reiki. Most are not even from Reiki. This movement away from the traditional Usui Reiki I, described in the beginning of this text, is now being widely discussed. Many practitioners are in favor of them - many are opposed, and the discussions can be very lively, with each side being adamant in their opinion.
Crystals are an example. Dr. Usui did not use crystals in his Reiki. I mentioned earlier that I was interested in crystal healing energy. On many occasions, I slipped a crystal into my clients’ hand and asked them to do a simple visualization to help in their own healing. That is an example of an add-on.
For me, whether add-ons should or should not be used is not an issue. The issue should be not IF the practitioner uses an add-on, but WHY the practitioner uses an add-on? And the answer goes to the heart of this book. I believe that practitioners who use add-ons, and I include myself, do so because they feel that something within the scope of traditional Reiki is lacking. It is that sense of empowerment I want you to feel deep in your very being. When practitioners use their knowledge and their expertise, gained in other healing modalities to enhance the total healing effect of the Reiki session, how can that be misusing the Universal gift we all have received? You cannot do Reiki wrong.
Once you connect with the Reiki Energy (done by simply calling out to Universe that you are ready to begin to channel Reiki) the Energy flows. Period. A practitioner cannot channel Reiki incorrectly. The Energy would not allow it.
If the practitioner adds something to the Reiki session that he/she believes will increase the overall healing effect for their clients (and empowering themselves at the same time), why should others who don’t accept add-ons object? I believe that Reiki’s ultimate goal is to bring a sense of peace, a healing harmony and balance into our world. I do not think that Reiki objects to using its healing energy in harmony with the energy given off by a crystal. And who is to say that crystal energy is not an aspect of Reiki Energy? Crystals are born within Mother Earth. Crystals are part of Universe. And if crystals are not part of Reiki, surely they are a very close relative! However, to remain within a state of honesty and integrity, practitioners must let their clients know in the beginning of the session that they may or will use a healing technique that is not part of the traditional Usui Reiki system. This may require a discussion, depending on the add-on.
Robert Levy has been a Reiki Master since 1996 and began teaching Reiki in 2001. He is a non-traditional Reiki Master, though he was trained in the Usui tradition. He chooses to empower people in his Reiki workshops by encouraging them to believe - and know in their hearts - that Reiki is an evolving modality and what each practitioner brings to Reiki is exactly what should be done at that time, in that place. He combines, and also encourages his students to combine, Reiki with other healing modalities. Robert has been conducting Reiki Workshop in all three levels of Reiki, as well as both traditional and/or Shamanic Reiki sessions for over a decade. He is the author of Shamanic Reiki and Shamanism: Book of Journeys.
