What is most crucial to our happiness and well-being? One theme recurs again and again throughout our lives - the quality of our relationships – with our family, spouses/partners, friends, colleagues, clients and with ourselves. No matter where you are in your life as you start the new year, whatever challenges you face, improving your relationships will enhance the overall quality of your life.
As a Reflexologist for over forty years, I have seen the power of reflexology to nurture, expand, deepen and heal relationships. How can working on your feet help your relationships? Reflexology works by relieving stress, promoting relaxation and creating a profound sense of inner peace.
Dissipating stress opens the door to communication. Reflexology not only brings people (parents and children, husbands and wives…) together. By its very nature, reflexology focuses the attention on each other in a warm, loving way, free of distractions. It can unite two people in a special, intimate relationship and strengthens your relationship each time you do it.
For couples, reflexology is both affectionate play and serious therapy. When my partner Michael and I have a tiff, he grabs my feet and helps me calm down. Reducing tension enhances sexual sensitivity and responsiveness – a great form of non-verbal communication for foreplay and afterplay!
For families, reflexology is a great way to "talk" to children through their feet. Children need healers and mentors in their lives, and reflexology provides an excellent setting for your child – and you – to learn that you can be healer, mentor, and friend, as well as parent.
On the job, reflexology helps people become less irritable and easier to work with. You become more tolerant of others’ quirky habits, jangling phones, and a coworker’s impatience. And, when you feel good, others respond – feeling good is contagious!
And, for your relationship with yourself, reflexology is great for "breaking the habit" – whether it’s smoking, weight gain, or letting go of any other addictive behavior in your life. Beginning to love yourself is crucial to breaking addictions. Reflexology can enable you to replace the addictive patterns in your life with healthy ones, and start to feel stronger, happier and more in charge.
Whatever you do, take steps right now to nurture your relationships. Your commitment to yourself, your family, your friends and your partner will be returned to you many times over this year, and for many years to come.
