Ask the Astrology Guy

by Reverend Jeff Pica

Hi Astrology Guy,

I honestly am so new to reading composite charts. Not so much for synastry or natal charts, but these, yes.

I have never seen this before when looking at charts. Could you help me out? I was wondering if you could explain how a mystic rectangle (aspect) works in a composite chart (Relationship Astrology) and what the aspect means?

I just don't understand with a composite chart how you're really supposed to interpret that. I feel there haven't been very many web sites that have very informative descriptions. I am one who looks at natal charts and synastry charts quite often, and I've never seen that aspect, so I am very curious.
I met a guy, I mean, we're datin. It's new. I'm just interested because this isn't an aspect I've ever seen before, we seem to get a long almost frighteningly well. No problem!

I think astrology is hard because it's just so many different things to look at and interpret at the same time. How did you get better at reading charts? Is it best to sort of memorize the planets and houses and then go from there?

My birthday would be July 18th, 1989 @3:10PM, in Bucaramanga, Colombia and Vinny's would be March 15th, 1989 @ 7:15AM in Salt lake City, Utah.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Best,
Krista

Hi Krista,

thanks for writing in.

To begin with, a good way to study natal charts is to learn the meaning of the planets, signs, and houses, then graduate to aspects, then overall chart interpretation.

In general, there are three branches of Astrology: (1) Natal Astrology, a reading of the natal chart, which can be cast from the moment you are born, that reveals the basic traits and condition of your soul. A natal chart represents you, now, a sum total of all your past incarnations and describes ways to help promote soul growth, in this lifetime. Everything has a birth date, including buildings, businesses, governments, inaugurations, even ideas, so a natal chart can be cast, giving rise to Financial Astrology, Stock Market Astrology, Horary Astrology, Electional Astrology, etc. (2) Forecast Astrology is taking a look at where the stars are today, and interpret how they interact with your Natal chart, which might forsee a new job or romance, etc. and (3) Relationship Astrology, which looks at A. Natal Astrology, where you can assess each person's relationship capabilities, B. Synastry, how your natal chart interacts with another's, which details personality interaction and compatibility, and C. by casting a Composite chart, which takes the midpoints of both natal charts and casting a third relationship chart, representing the union of the two people (charts.)

Krista, you would read a composite chart the way you would a natal chart but keeping in mind you're reading for a couple.

For example, if a composite chart has composite Venus conjunct the Seventh House cusp (ones marriage house,) then their union should be a very loving one.

However, a composite chart with Venus conjunct the Seventh House cusp, but one person's natal Saturn squares the others natal Venus (synastry) then no matter how well they get along, they may never be able to get past their prior lifetime(s) of challenging karma, and get to the love.

If each person has natal Saturn square Venus, then they may have a hard time expressing themselves individually, let alone in a relationship. If each person has natal Saturn square Venus, then the composite chart will have composite Saturn square Venus. The romance may never get off the ground because each person has limits to how much they can participate.

If a composite chart has a mystic rectangle (an advanced aspect denoting spiritual and psychic energy) then perhaps the union of the two people achieves a spiritual experience that neither one could achieve on their own, or perhaps if the two people work together, they can spiritually help others as an effective team.

Let's take a brief look at you two natally.

Krista's Natal:

With your Sun in Cancer, you're sweet, sensitive, and caring, Sun located in the Eighth House brings a deep, more penetrating personality, usually quite sexual. Your Sun makes an opposing aspect to your Moon, often in the charts of those who's parents are divorced or somehow otherwise separated. Moon in Capricorn adds an ambitious, organized, and somewhat austere face to your emotions, and Moon located in the Second House reveals your connection to nature; you are stable, reliable with a desirous nature.

Your Venus is conjunct (close to) Mars adds a passionate nature, in Leo you're big, bold, and proud, similar in nature to your last, just previous incarnation as evidenced by Venus and Mars conjunct the South Node. This passionate pair in the Ninth House shows your love of adventures, anything foreign and of expanding your mind and consciousness. Both square Pluto reveals an extreme and lustful side.

With Jupiter in your Seventh House you will always benefit from partnerships, professional and personal, and have a great circle of social contacts (with a Gemini House Cusp) who share ideas and knowledge.

Your Ascendant/Descendant Axis (cusps of the First and Seventh Houses) squares your Midheaven/Nadir axis (cusps of the Tenth and Fourth Houses) which denotes a general lifetime pattern of finding it difficult, or at least challenging, to balance successfully the major life categories of Self, Others, Family, and Career, a common aspect.

Vinny's Natal:

His Sun is conjunct (close to) Venus, making him a loving, peaceful person, sweet, in Pisces an empathetic dreamer and in the Twelfth House he's compassionate, helpful, and tender.

Vinny's Moon in Cancer, a natural placement denoting a nurturing parent, comforting, and doting, makes a conjunction to the Fourth House cusp, and both make a square aspect to the Ascendant/Descendant axis, which might make him oversensitive; opposed Saturn, hard to reach or distant; opposed Neptune, impressionable, and opposed Uranus, erratic and rebellious. With the Moon also opposed the Midheaven, others may see or he may show others this part of himself.

A Grand Trine (an aspect of balanced energy) includes his Mercury in the Twelfth House, a very creative thinker and writer; his Pluto in Scorpio in the Eighth House, a penetrating personality able to effect others; and his caring and domestic Moon in Cancer in the Fourth House.

He also has Ascendant/Descendant Axis squaring his Midheaven/Nadir axis.

Your's and his Synastry:

Your Saturn, Uranus and Pluto opposes his Moon and squares his Ascendant/Descendant Axis, which denotes past life/lives interaction, karmic ties from knowing each other before, where you were some type of a controlling force to him, where you had the upper hand, perhaps as an employer or parent, etc...

Your Uranus squares his Sun, so he finds you to be exciting to be around. Your Jupiter squares his Sun and Venus, so it'll be easy for him to fall in love with because you expand him, both personally and romantically.

His Venus squares your square His Ascendant/Descendant Axis, so you like hanging around him too ;) and to boot his Pluto squares your Mars so you find him sexy.

Their Composite:

The composite Venus conjuncts Jupiter, revealing this as an encompassing and far reaching relationship, growth promoting, and fun, in Gemini, where you can talk and grow together, and in the Fifth House of love affairs, indicating a big, even showy, love.

Composite Sun conjunct Mercury, an indication of good communication, in Taurus, a steady and stable placement. Sun/Mercury in the Fourth House, a loving caring placement; trine Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune in Capricorn, a good mix of structure, independence and romance all conjunct the Ascendant, a relationship with nothing to hide.

Your composite chart has the Ascendant/Descendant Axis trine and sextile the Midheaven/Nadir axis. (Trine: all signs within the same element of Fire, Earth, Air or Water and sextile: signs in compatible elements of Fire & Air or Earth & Water.) Where individually you both have a challenging time balancing the major life categories of Self, Others, Family, and Career, your composite chart shows that together you help each other successfully manage these life areas.

Although the composite chart indicates basic stability, there is a composite T Square (an aspect of tension.) Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune in Capricorn conjunct the Ascendant all make an opposing aspect to Mars in Cancer conjunct the Descendant. This aspect of volatility needs a physical release, such as sex of course, but also in some type of healthy competition, such as being on opposite sporting or game playing teams. Then all involved planets (Uranus, Saturn, Neptune and Mars) square the Moon, (creating a large T formation across the chart) which can create an emotionally charged and changeable environment, especially with composite Moon in argumentative Aries.

Tension is usually the output of any opposition in a chart, be it natal, synastry, or composite. However, if there are two oppositions present in a chart (which involves the energies of four planets) and all the planets concerned both trine and sextile each other then a mystic rectangle is formed. In other words, two oppositions transform where one help will help the other express it's higher meaning.

The opposition component of the composite T-Square (the opposition of Uranus/Saturn/Neptune/Ascendant to Mars/Descendant,) as mentioned above, we'll call Opposition 1, creates trines and sextiles with composite Opposition 2: Pluto/Midheaven opposing Mercury/Nadir (cusp of the Fourth House,) therefore creating a composite mystic rectangle.

Opposition 2 reveals a depth to the communication between you two and to the psychological information available to you both, that transcends the ordinary and mundane.

In other words, the energy created when the two of you are together (Opposition 1) combined with the knowledge and insight present between you two (Opposition 2) can be put to a higher use when turned outward toward society and shared with the public. There is the potential for each of you to encompass your partner's views and create a larger perception, and when turned outward, together you can influence other's opinions. If your relationship flourishes, what opinions you two can influence in others will most likely present themselves, given the wisdom and spiritual nature of the mystic rectangle.

I hope this helps.

Jeff
