Ask Your Pet

by Jennifer Dickman

Dear Jennifer,

My son and I were forced to relocate due to illness. We had to find a new home for my son’s cat, Pride, with a female friend. I’d like to know from Pride: Are you getting enough attention? Is there anything bothering you in your body? Would anything make you feel more comfortable? Is there anything you would like us to know?

Shana

Dear Shana,

Pride says he is getting enough attention from your friend. Physically, with the caveat that I’m not a veterinarian and this isn’t a medical diagnosis or medical advice, I do get the impression from Pride that he perhaps has allergies. I feel like there’s nasal congestion/irritation, and also a slight pressure around his left eye. He says his eyes sometimes feel a little runny or itchy. Again, I’m experiencing and reporting Pride’s sensations as he conveys them, but this is certainly not a substitute for a veterinary exam.

When I asked Pride if anything would make him more comfortable, he showed me a soft purple pillow. He really wants that pillow. Perhaps you’ll have some idea where he saw it. Other than that, he would just like a comfortable, private spot where he could be on his own. He says the lady he is with is very nice and loves him, but sometimes she’s just too much and isn’t in tune with when he’d like quiet time on his own. There are times when he likes the hugs and snuggles, but sometimes he likes to be by himself. He’s showing me an image of a closet that’s propped open, but has some sort of curtain partially covering it. Spending a lot of time in a closet wouldn’t be healthy for him if he has allergies, but perhaps a private spot or “cat castle” could be set up for him.

Pride misses you both very much. He wants you to stop feeling guilty. He knows you’re doing the best you can for him, and he’s fairly happy in his current situation. He understands why you had to move without him, and while he misses you greatly, isn’t upset with you. He’s okay with it if he has to stay with his current person, but he still considers you and your son to be his true family.

If it becomes possible, he would prefer to be with you, especially if at least one of you will be home with him a lot. He says you and he both deserve to relax and enjoy life. Pride says you need to move to “the area where the horses are” and then have him move back with you. It feels sunny, and there is a sliding glass door. I think he’s visualizing your future home - whether real or an imagined home he’d like to share with you, I’m not quite sure.
Pride loves you very much. He seems to be content with his current situation, but still hopes to be reunited with you and your son someday.

Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
