Ask Your Pet

by Jennifer Dickman

Dear Jennifer,

I have three dogs and a cat.  For the four years we’ve had my dog Ziggy Bear (a rescue) he’s been profoundly epileptic.  We’ve spent thousands of dollars trying to lessen his seizures, but in spite of being on four different medications that leave him continually sleepy, he has cluster seizures every two weeks.  In between, he seems happy and to enjoy his family.  I just wish I knew how he feels about the constant struggle. Do you think Ziggy Bear wants to go on?  It’s been suggested to us that we should put him down. He’s eight, but he seems to want to go on. I just don’t know what he wants. We love him very much.

Lisa D.

Dear Lisa,

I’m so sorry for the suffering Ziggy Bear and your family are enduring. As this is a medical issue, before I say anything else I need to advise you that I’m not a veterinarian, and nothing in this column is a medical diagnosis or medical advice. I’m definitely not a substitute for veterinary care or guidance. What I’m able to do is relay to you the impressions I receive from Ziggy Bear about your questions. But, this is a serious situation, so if it comes down to choosing between trusting me or your vet, trust your vet!

The seizures are very difficult for Ziggy Bear, as I’m sure you can tell. He abhors them and losing control of both his mind and body. They are far from a pleasant experience. On the other hand, much of what you’re seeing he doesn’t really remember, so he’s being spared some of it. Even if conscious, his consciousness either isn’t there during much of the seizure behavior, or he forgets after they stop. They leave him feeling weak and shaken and a bit confused.

That being said, Ziggy Bear is also a trooper. He enjoys his life in between the seizures and loves your family very much. He does feel them coming on a couple days ahead, which provokes some dread. But, you’re correct that he’s generally happy in your home. He doesn’t like the seizures and wishes they would stop. He wishes his medications didn’t make him so drowsy. But, on the other hand, he isn’t asking me for help to cross over right now. He doesn’t feel like he’s at that point to me.

If possible, I would consult with a holistic veterinarian. They have more in their arsenal - flower essences, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbs - all depending on the particular doctor, of course. Ultimately, I can’t and wouldn’t tell you to ignore your veterinarian’s advice. If your veterinarian feels there is a medical reason that it’s time for Ziggy Bear to cross over, I’m not qualified to say differently. However, getting a second opinion never hurts, especially from a holistic veterinarian with more tools at his or her disposal.

Wishing the best for Ziggy Bear and your family!

Many Blessings, Jennifer Dickman
