Dear Beth,

Thank you for reaching out on behalf of your son, Jason. My father passed away when I was only 14, and although I didn’t dream of him I would occasionally smell whiffs of his cherry tobacco pipe smoke. When I was young I remember sitting on his lap to watch him pack cherry tobacco into his walnut pipe, and I personally loved that smell. Years later and sometimes even now when I’m stressed or on the verge of making crucial decisions, my dad will leave traces of that aromatic, woodsy smell. What Jason has experienced is called an "olfactory" occurrence. Departed souls can formulate fragrances (like cologne or flowers), food smells that would remind you of them or even smoke. It’s one of the rarest forms of communication because their energy has to formulate a particular scent.

The most common way that a soul communicates is through dreams. When we dream of someone who is passed on, our soul has left our body and is communicating with them in the fourth dimension. It’s important to keep a pad and pen by the bed to write down "impressions" that we have received from them. Most times the messages are simple phrases or even a single sentence, because they are working telepathically. Another way of communication is through apparitions, while you are awake. This is when a deceased loved one "appears" to us here in the third dimension by lowering their frequency so we can see them. This is called clairvoyance (or clear seeing).

Since the soul is electromagnetic energy, it can literally go through the electrical wires (the second most common way)! Examples are: Lights flickering or going on and off, appliances or TV’s turning on and off by themselves or the volume control changing, ceiling fans clicking and reversing and of course the phone rings – but no one is on the other end.

Also watch for objects being moved around the house – you live alone and you swear that you put your deceased mother’s ring on your nightstand and the next morning you find it down stairs on the kitchen counter! The spirit realms can manifest objects like "pennies from Heaven" and coins in unusual places. Or you’re driving in the car or shopping in the mall and you hear your departed dad’s favorite song, "My Way," by Frank Sinatra being played over and over – your dad’s saying "hello." This is called clairaudience (or clear hearing). You think of your grandmother and feel "warmth" or "chills" all over your body. Be aware of your feelings when thinking of a passed loved one. This type of communication is clairsentience (clear feeling).

Our loved ones can also send us messages to get our attention in the form of butterflies, dragonflies, birds, wild animals or even cats and dogs. And the list goes on. The important thing to remember is "awareness is the key." These occurrences are not your imagination. They are a very direct way of your loved ones proving their existence after death and just popping in to let you know they can still see you and they love you.

Dear Kathy,

This is a very good question and I can empathize with your plight. I’ve been an artist all my life, but 18 years ago I started to see symbols around individuals which led to communication from spirit guides, angels and departed loved ones. And yes, they are very happy to have you as their mouthpiece – sometimes waiting years to get through to communicate with those here on earth. I learned how to turn this gift on and off and control it so I wasn’t dizzy, drained and depleted of energy. Here’s a very good exercise to do before and after you do your healing work.

By doing this simple exercise consistently, you will gain control over your gifts and be able to open up and shut down easily. I know this will help you.
