Power Outage Generates a Spark of Divine Love
by Mindy Carlisle
I live in a rural part of New Hampshire and we lost electric power for 2 days due to a fierce wind and rain storm. On the second day, I decided to go to town to get breakfast.
A man named “John” was sitting outside the restaurant at a table. He asked me for money so he could get a bus ticket home to Boston. He said he had just gotten out of prison, and he was only given $5. This wasn’t enough for a bus ticket. He held up the $5 bill to show me.
I am cautious about giving people money, since I do not know if they will use it for something other than the reason stated. I said I would be happy to buy him a meal. That was acceptable to him, so we went into the restaurant.
We ordered food and sat down at a table by the window. A book on the table next to ours had words on the back cover that read, “How to see God”. I read it aloud and asked John if he believes in God. He replied, “Yes.”
John was humble and he spoke with sincerity. He told me about his 3 children, who were being raised by their grandmother. He planned to get a job to help support them and to be a father to them. I sensed he loved them dearly.
I felt like I was speaking to a dear friend and that we were connecting with Divine Love. I wondered if I’d met John previously, maybe in dreams, since he seemed so familiar. Maybe I know him from a past life?
I told John that I sing HU (hyoo) to find peace and God’s guidance in times of need. He found this interesting, and he said he could go online for more information at eckankar.org. I remarked how much I value the inner and outer guidance I’ve received from personal experiences with ECKANKAR.
I drove John to the bus station, used my credit card to buy him a ticket to Boston, and gave him another $5 in cash. As we said goodbye, we shared a heart to heart hug that lasted quite a while. It was one of the deepest hugs I have ever shared with anyone. Divine Love flowed between us.
Ten days later, I saw a credit of $16 on my credit card statement. John returned the money for the bus ticket to me! He was returning my money and also showing appreciation for the very special moments we shared.
I am grateful for having this experience, because it opened my heart to Divine Love. It was a wonderful lesson about listening to inner guidance and helping someone else in a time of need. It taught me about treating each person with dignity and respect, regardless of their outer circumstances ,because as Soul we are equal in the eyes of Divine Spirit.
