Eckankar: Reaching Your God-Given Potential
by Jeff Deckman
So, what is our God-given potential? And what can we do to manifest it in ways that will lead to our spiritual success or usefulness?
Well, if we are thinking spiritually, the potential is not our ability to sing, dance or pass exams. What we are talking about is vastly improving our potential to give and receive God’s love. We can then be more successful and useful in our service to God and all our fellow beings.
But in order to do that, we must improve our awareness of our connection with God Itself. We already are connected. So how can we improve that connection?
One thing I have learned is that I cannot use my mind to think or intellectualize my way to increasing my connection with God.
While my mind is good at helping me survive and thrive in the material worlds, it is quite inept at helping me grow spiritually. In fact, it often works in opposition to those efforts because it is not designed to deal with spiritual issues. It is of the physical plane and therefore its effectiveness is limited.
For me, this means I need to rise above my mind so that I can begin to realize my God-given potential as Soul. I must engage in practices that quiet the mind and its incessant chattering which blocks me from experiencing God’s Love.
Meditation and contemplation help as does engagement in activities that free me from my mental state such as listening to the waves of the ocean; being in nature; listening to soothing music or whatever works for you.
However, what I have found to be, by far, the most effective tool to help me more quickly and thoroughly connect to God is to chant “HU”, a simple, but powerful, love song to God. It sounds like the man’s name Hugh. By sitting quietly and singing “Hyuuuuuuu” with long, relaxing breaths for several minutes I find that I experience a spiritual peacefulness which centers me in Holy Spirit. The intent of the HU Chant is simply “Thy will be done”. God has already blessed all life and by singing HU I can be a little bit (sometimes a lot) more aware of and thankful for those blessings.
Think of the HU as a spiritual lullaby for the mind to gently quiet it’s chatter. Then, with a quieted mind, I can better achieve my goal of being able to reach more of my God-given potential to give and receive Love.
So, for me, it all starts with the HU. And who knows it may start with the HU for you! Give it a try and see for yourself.
The HU is for everyone on any spiritual path. I am a member of Eckankar.
