Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
My dog, Sam, is ill. We’ll be assisting him to pass soon, and I know that we’re doing the right thing. What I’d like to ask is what you can tell me about the “other side” for dogs. Will we see Sam again there? Who will he be with in the meantime? Will he be able to visit us or give us signs?
Thanks.
Ron
Dear Ron,
I’m very sorry to hear this. I’ve spoken to many animals in Spirit. I don’t claim to have all of the answers about what things are like for them. But, I’ve been able to reach some conclusions that seem pretty universal in my communications.
First, crossing over isn’t scary for them. They’re surrounded by light, and generally Spirit beings (perhaps what we conceive of as Angels) help them to cross over. They then reunite with people and animals they were close to in life. Sometimes they stay together, and sometimes they don’t. When they don’t “live” together, they do still seem to have access to each other. Sometimes animals have tasks in Spirit. I once communicated with a cat who was primarily staying in a place that resembled a nursing home. The cat explained that it was a place for people who had been sick for a long time before crossing over, and were confused. They would stay there as they began to work through the fact that they had crossed, and get ready to move on to other places in Spirit. The cat was just like a therapy cat in an earthly nursing home.
Yes, our animals do visit us after they cross. It’s generally quite often at first, partially because their homes feel comfortable to them, but more so because they want to be there to comfort their people. Usually the only thing that troubles them is the grief they leave behind, and they always want their families to know that they’re fine, will always love them, and that those bonds of love will never be broken. They want them to know they are not “gone” and can still hear them talking to them, and still sense when their people are upset and they’re needed.
It’s often frustrating to them that they can’t be seen or send concrete signs. The easiest and most common way for them to communicate is to visit their people in dreams. I always suggest that clients place a pen and piece of paper by their beds to record these dreams when they come, and ask their animal companions to join them in a dream before they go to sleep. It doesn’t always happen the first night, but if one is relaxed and open about it, it does seem to happen fairly quickly for many people.
You will see Sam again. Someday you’ll be together in Spirit. In the meantime, he may choose to reincarnate and return to you. Or, he may decide to wait and watch over you from Spirit.
Wishing you peace and healing during this difficult time.
Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
