Reading the Land
by Gwendolyn Evans
Do you realize that the land you walk on has life and energy? Most of us walk around not thinking about what is under our feet. Even the parts that are covered by asphalt and concrete have that life-force energy underneath. This is an important time to understand and cultivate a deeper connection with the Earth, right in your own backyard.
Our backyard offers a unique and spiritual opportunity to connect with Mother Earth and the various beings who live with us. And don't forget there are many nonphysical beings who cohabitate with us in our yards. Even tiny clumps of grass and weeds sprouting from cracks in sidewalks hold life force energy and tiny beings. Perhaps this is the time to make contact by learning a little about how to read the landscape you inhabit.
To begin this process, it's very important to ask permission from the land, and from the myriad of physical entities who inhabit this place and from the nature spirits who watch over the place. Ask these spirits to allow you to connect and invite them to make connection with you in some way. Hold the intention to be open to whatever ways the spirits show themselves to you. There are many ways that spirits will show up; it might be a connection with some living creature, a sense of wind or air movement, a certain pattern in the plant beings.
Cultivating the skills of observation is key to reading your landscape. Walk the land in relative quiet and solitude to read the landscape with all your senses; sight, touch-feel, smell, taste, listening with heart and ears,. Open your intuition through connection with the landscape. What feelings or sensations are you experiencing as you move gently around this green space?
Use your visual sense to identify and learn the language of the plant beings. Look for patterns, such as spirals, radials, branching, circles, spheres, random scatters. Be curious about what this is expressing, and pay attention to the emotional and physical sensations you experience.
Your landscape has its own language and life cycle and will take on changes as the weather and seasons shift. Create a special practice of meditation and observation throughout the year to witness these changes. Record these observations in a special journal and become a devotee of your green space.
As you follow this practice, your observations will become more refined, more details and secrets will be revealed. You are attuning your intuition to this space and so do not be surprised if you catch a glimpse of a fairy or nature spirit, or hear a quiet whisper from a tree.
And perhaps most importantly, share your gratitude and appreciation with the Earth. Whether you say special prayers, make small offerings or just stand in your yard and say Thank You, that action increases positive vibrational effects on all the beings, including yourself.
Whether you are a climate activist, a gardening enthusiast, or just an nature-lover, it's time to take your relationship with the Earth to the next level. By slowing down and beginning to listen and engage with the landscape, we will begin to better hear what our Earth is saying and what she needs.
