Ask Your Pet
by Jennifer Dickman
Dear Jennifer,
My cat, Mercedes, is 8. In the past month, she’s been looking around, like she sees something, and then running around frantically, like she’s chasing it. Would you please ask her why she’s doing this?
Jillian
Dear Jillian,
If you haven’t already done so, I’d recommend taking Mercedes to a veterinarian for an evaluation immediately. I always recommend a vet visit for any change in behavior. And, while sometimes the behavior Mercedes is exhibiting can be a cat quirk, or for other reasons I’ll explore with her, it can also be a sign of a neurologic problem. So, again, I’d urge you to take her for a vet exam regardless of what she tells me in the reading.
When I connect with Mercedes, there is a very anxious energy. I see her moving her head from side to side, like she’s guarding for something. She’s showing herself sitting at the top of a carpeted staircase and looking down, because she feels safer in that position, able to see everything in the room below her.
I’m asking Mercedes if she knows why she’s feeling so anxious, and acting like she’s watching for something. She’s showing me an orange male cat, who is appearing at what seems to be a sliding glass door. She can also see him when she looks out various windows. She says there are times when she’s sitting by the door and he comes right up to it and scares her.
Although he’s not in your house, and not around all the time, he seems to have been the trigger for putting Mercedes in a state of anxiety that’s causing her to become spooked very easily. She says she’s becoming frightened of everyday things in your home - noises, the energies cats can see but most humans can’t, noises from outside. In her opinion, this is what’s causing the behaviors you’re concerned about.
With that said, I would still urge you to take her to the vet. I can always perceive incorrectly, and I’d hate for something medical to be missed because of something I said. If the vet doesn’t find anything, then I’d recommend putting something at the bottom of the sliding glass door to obstruct Mercedes’s view of the cat, and locating the cat and following him home to ask his family to keep him inside. The “anxiety” remedy in the animal collection from Green Hope Farm Essences, or something similar, would also likely help her.
This situation unfortunately occurs sometimes, and is yet another reason that I highly recommend that people keep their cats indoors, or safely confined in “catios” or similar outdoor play areas.
Many Blessings,
Jennifer Dickman
