The Power of Hu
by Mark Lopatosky
Imagine what it would be like to have more spiritual freedom in your life.
What does that mean, spiritual freedom? Harold Klemp, the spiritual leader of Eckankar, has given insights on the subject in some of his writings. One source is the book What is Spiritual Freedom?. Here is a quote from the book:
“What does life require of us? To be able to survive, to go out there and have the experiences of life, and to learn from them. To become better spiritual beings. And by becoming better spiritual beings, we become more self-sufficient. We become better able to handle ourselves in one crisis after another, as well as in the good times. This moves us toward spiritual freedom in this lifetime. When you have more spiritual freedom, you have more happiness and independence. This is what we are looking for.”
Many people have found that singing the word HU helps them in this process. HU has a vibration which, when sung with love and gratitude, connects us with the deepest, most sacred part of ourselves. It is important when singing this, to not direct the energy for any specific end, but rather to open ourselves to the love and guidance of the life force, or divine spirit, whatever you like to call it. We trust that this force knows what’s best for us and for the situation. This trusting is gratitude.
I have been singing HU for over 40 years and I know my life is much more positive now because of it.
To me this is the main benefit, this gradual unfoldment, but there are times when a more immediate effect has happened.
I always had a fear of speaking in front of people. Once I was asked to be on a panel at an Eckankar seminar. I was nervous about it, but still said yes. I figured if I froze there were others there to start talking.
The morning I was to speak I was gripped with fear. My mind was in a fog. I had trouble formulating thoughts and I doubted my ability to do the panel. I decided to keep on as I’d made a commitment.
When I got to the seminar I met the other panel participants. We sang HU together before going onstage. As we sang I felt the fog lift. I would be okay. To me it was a true miracle.
Later I had an insight into a past life. In that life if I shared my beliefs I’d be seriously hurt. I could see the connection between the fear in that life and this one. My fear of speaking had been lessened, but not completely gone. That came with continuing to speak and becoming more comfortable with it. There were set backs, but also a nice progression, all the while singing HU in my life.
A small but significant step on the road to spiritual freedom, as now I had a choice instead of being controlled by fear.
