After Ultimatum Homeopathy Helps Tame Hyperactivity

by Padmini Sagar, MD

Teachers gave my 6-year-old patient, Kyle, and his mother an ultimatum: Either put Kyle on pharmaceutical medication for his hyperactivity or the school will suspend him because of his disruptive behavior. Both Kyle and his mother wanted an alternative—and it turned out to be homeopathy.

Kyle showed up at my office soon after the ultimatum. Kyle’s mother was not keen on giving pharmaceuticals to her son. But she was worried that she might have no other choice. Kyle’s grandmother, who had some knowledge of homeopathy, got involved and wondered if a homeopathic remedy would work. (I’ve changed Kyle’s name to protect his identity.)

Kyle’s hyperactivity started when he was 4 years old. His pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers were patient and were able to manage him. But his first-grade teacher was unable to do so.

According to the teacher, Kyle was constantly moving around the classroom, wouldn’t sit in his seat, and would disrupt other students. As a result, other children also misbehaved. But Kyle never injured anyone, nor did he break anything. It’s just that he couldn’t sit still.

Kyle was intelligent, social, and well-liked by his classmates. Even as a first-grader, he could read at the third-grade level. He played both soccer and baseball. Although he was hyperactive at home, his mother knew how to handle him.

I decided to treat Kyle with a homeopathic remedy and sent a note to the school regarding our plan. I asked the school to hold off taking any action for two weeks.

In homeopathy we look at the entire picture of the patient and select the matching remedy. The remedy selection is never based on one symptom alone, in this case hyperactivity.

Hyperactive children may belong to one of four groups.

1. Those with very high energy without concentration or attention problems.

2. Those with attention problems that prevent children from focusing and learning.

3. Those with attention problems who are also violent and destructive.

4. Those with attention problems but who exhibit no hyperactivity or violence.

Kyle belonged to the first group. His profile was a match for the homeopathic medicine Sulphur. Kyle has very high energy associated with hyperactivity. He has a high level of intelligence, sociability, and leadership qualities. Physically, he has a warm body temperature and certain food preferences (cold liquids, pizza, bacon, pasta, spicy foods, and ice cream) that are found in patients who respond to Sulphur.

He took one dose of Sulphur at 200C potency in my office and then we set his next appointment for a month later. I asked his mother to call me with updates and problems.

Kyle did not show for his follow-up appointment. I became concerned and called his mother to find out what was happening. She told me that there were no complaints from his teacher or his school though Kyle remained a very high energy child. She didn’t think a follow-up appointment was necessary.

I knew Kyle would be back some time in the future when the new balance in his system brought about by the Sulphur remedy was disturbed again. But that might be in a few months or even a few years. Fortunately, the remedy didn’t rob Kyle of his energy or make him dull, but simply helped him to calm down so he could sit in his classroom and behave.

Kyle did come back one year later when he was in second grade. He was facing suspension from school again. His symptom picture was the same as before. I repeated the remedy at the same strength in the office. I didn’t expect him to come back for a follow-up, so I called his mother a month later. Everything was going smoothly at school and the threat of suspension had been lifted.

I saw Kyle again for a physical examination three years later. He was in fifth grade and excelling in school and sports. Most important, there were no complaints from his school.

Two doses of a single homeopathic remedy tamed his disruptive behavior and saved him from years of treatment with—and side-effects from—pharmaceutical medications.

Attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity and behavioral problems are increasing in children in the last two decades. The cause is multifaceted. Genetic predisposition, premature birth, birth trauma, and maternal drug use can all play a role. But diet and social issues are equally important. Without managing these issues, pharmaceutical medication alone is of limited use.

Of course, not every case can be resolved as easily as Kyle’s. Sometimes, I have to experiment with a few remedies before finding the right one. But, when I do, the patient begins to improve quickly and often dramatically.
