With the summer nearly over, let’s focus on my #1 household pet-peeve… and that’s CLUTTER. I believe a cluttered home creates a cluttered life and a cluttered life causes stress and stress adversely affects our health. So let’s de-clutter.
It’s a running joke in my family. If you can’t find it, I probably gave it away or threw it away. I use a pretty simple rule. If something hasn’t been used in a year, it goes bye-bye. I have large heavy duty bags on hand. I keep one for charity. When I have books, games, clothes, toys, towels, dishes etc that haven’t been used in one year, they go "in the bag." I have another bag for trash. Any broken items, items not worth giving away, or items simply too old, go in that bag. Once per month, both bags are removed from my home. And to minimize "clothes hoarding", remember this rule, you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time. So I have given away the other 80% of my clothes and can breathe so much easier when I walk into my closet. Another easy rule is to never have more than you need. Did I really need 3 black tees or 24 champagne glasses? I don’t even like champagne. I do this cleaning out process continually. When putting folded laundry away, I might take the time to clean out a drawer. It always amazes me how much stuff accumulates in our home. I have even read that people with cluttered basements often have chronic constipation. The simple fact is that the less stuff that is in your home, the less "stuff" you have to take care of — and I truly believe, this will contribute to a healthier you.
