Dawn of the Feral Soul

by Marlene Buffa

Regeneration:

· (biology) growth anew of lost tissue or destroyed parts or organs

· the activity of spiritual or physical renewal

· re-formation: forming again (especially with improvements or removal of defects); renewing and reconstituting

When we bid farewell to the prior calendar year, we symbolically close the door on our past. With lessons and experiences completely behind us, moving in a new direction with new opportunities and possibilities provides us a chance to regenerate our lives and our spirits. In addition to beginning a new year, we start anew spiritually. The soul we tamed last year, becomes a feral, primal foundation for the rebirth of our human covenant with life.

Starting fresh, with a wild, almost primeval soul we place ourselves in the jungle of growth and development. Forgetting the past left behind in the dust of lessons already learned, we begin again, as raw energy, seeking the wisdom of life’s travails to mold us into our highest and best expression.

The soul, ever changing, always existing, stays with us from life to life, gauging our progress and balancing our behavior with our achievements. Life offers repeated chances to “get it right” and we welcome the chance to begin again, as a wild soul, to absorb the bounty of what we see, hear and do.

Man is distinguished from animals, as many religions tell us, by virtue of having a soul. The unseen, intangible and integral component of human life, exists primarily on faith, yet intrinsically an inner knowing. A soul cannot be measured or quantified, viewed by medical technology or palpable by manipulation. The soul persists in spite of bodily limitations and despite our choices!

Regeneration

With central disk intact, a starfish regenerates itself from just one remaining limb. Like the starfish, when our souls suffer damage from life experiences, with our spiritual core intact, we regenerate anew, as well. The new components of our soul, untested, yet very much a part of our being, are feral and wild with the viability and flexibility of new growth.

As our soul progresses through time, the reformation of our character augments our disparate nature and bonds together to progress on a new path of development.

The soul cannot renew itself as a mature, polished and capable self. If so, it would look exactly like what we dismissed as the truth about ourselves. Like the rest of life, renewal often originates from pain and disconnection with spirit. We then, detach from our dis-eased past, and regenerate a new inexperienced part of ourselves, allowing our new feral, or student, soul to emerge, eager to learn and grow in a positive direction. The new part of ourselves, merges with wholeness and completeness with our basic spiritual core, and we move forward.

Like a cherished discovery, our feral soul distinguishes itself as a natural power in our continuing existence. The wild, untamed beauty of pure potential, emerges, whether or not the man-made calendar says its time to leave the past behind.

May you enjoy the freedom of your feral soul, as you regenerate your spirit this coming year, and always!
